QUESTIONS RAISED ABOUT LACK OF PUBLIC WARNING OF DAM OPERATIONS
5/18/2017 4:10:47 PM

What role did dam and waterway management play in the recent flooding in Renfrew County? That's the question we here at myFM News are attempting to answer after several listeners brought their questions to us. One event garnering particular attention is when Renfrew Power Generation pulled a log from the Tramore dam, which is located between Round Lake and Golden Lake on the Bonnechere River. Some have suggested that by taking the pressure off Round Lake with the log pull, Golden Lake was flooded, and they're questioning why they weren't warned it was going to happen. Bonnechere Valley Mayor Jennifer Murphy says she's hearing the same things.

However, Shawn Cameron, Manager of Operations and Water Levels at RPG, wants to set the record straight. He says the log pull had no significant impact on Golden Lake.

We asked Cameron why RPG didn't notify the municipalities or the public about the operation.

Cameron and Murphy both agree that with the extraordinary amount of rain we had, combined with spring melt, it simply created too much water for the system to get rid of, creating the worst flooding to hit Renfrew County in decades.
