MILITARY VETERANS TRY KAYAK FISHING IN INAUGURAL EVENT
8/11/2017 3:09:20 PM

The Upper Ottawa River Race and Paddle Festival kicked off with a new event this morning (Aug 11).

The first ever Reel Kayaks and Real Heroes event was designed for injured or ill military veterans to learn the benefits of kayak fishing.

Kelly Williams is the Manager for Parks and Recreation for Petawawa and helped organize the paddle festival, and he says this event came from the idea of giving back.

There weren't as many participants as they would've hoped for the first year, but Williams says the committee will talk more in the fall and see where they can make improvements.

The festival continues tonight with race pre-registration and a film festival in Pembroke's Riverside Park. Tomorrow will be the kayak fishing derby, kayak races and many other events taking place at Petawawa Point and Riverside Park.
