NEW FUNDING TO HELP BUILD MORE BIKE LANES IN AREA

Ottawa Valley municipalities are getting a pile of government funding to help build bike lanes. Laurentian Hills, Laurentian Valley and Pembroke are each getting $25 000 under a 93 million dollar package announced on Monday by the provincial government. Petawawa will receive over $90 000, while Renfrew County itself is getting over $372 000 for bike lanes and biking infrastructure. Ontario's transportation minister says the government is spending more than twice the amount than it did last year, as part of a four-year municipal commuter plan that's meant to help the province reach its greenhouse gas reduction targets. Funding for the program comes from the proceeds of the cap-and-trade program.
