REFERENDUM QUESTION WILL ASK BV RESIDENTS IF THEY WANT TO ABANDON WARD SYSTEM

Bonnechere Valley Township held a public meeting last night about the referendum question they're going to put on the next municipal election ballot. It may seem early, but council has to pass the bylaw allowing the question by March 1, so the timeline was pretty tight. The question being added will read, "Are you in favour of The Corporation of the Township of Bonnechere Valley passing a by-law so that all councillors, including the Mayor, are elected by general vote instead of the current ward system of voting?" Mayor Jennifer Murphy explains why they're adding it to the ballot for this election.

Resident Esther Roesner participated in the discussion about the ward system, and thinks getting rid of it is long overdue.

There were at least 20 people in attendance at the meeting, and all of those who spoke were in favour of being able to vote for all members of council, not just the one running in their ward.
