BEARS CAUGHT ROAMING LOCAL PROPERTIES

This time of year brings out bears looking for food. There have been recent reports of bears foraging for food in populated areas, but officials say if there is no food source on your property, a bear won't stay long and it likely won't come back. Residents can reduce the chances of a bear coming to their property by storing household waste bins in a garage or shed, freezing odorous food waste and placing it out on the morning of collection day, wrapping food waste well in newspaper or paper bags, using lime in your green cart to help reduce odors or layer it with yard waste, rising all waste bins after each collection and keeping BBQs and grills clean and free of grease. If you are to encounter a bear, it's important to avoid contact, not to approach the bear and if you do spot one, don't run, back away slowly. You can call Ontario Bear Wise in the cause of a non-emergency at 1-866-514-2327 and in the case of an immediate emergency, call 9-1-1.
