NEW TRIAL ORDERED

The man currently serving a 22 month sentence for dangerous driving causing death, after retired Chief Warrent Officer Ernie Hall was killed when leaving a Pembroke Lumber Kings game back in 2015, has had his conviction overturned. According to the Eganville Leader, Martial Laverdure was sentenced to 22 months in prison and probation last year after being found guilty in the case. However, the Ontario Court of Appeal has since over-ruled that conviciton and has ordered a new trial. A spokesperson for the court of appeal in Toronto says that Justice Martin James, who presided over the trial, made a legal error in the issue of whether or not Laverdure's behaviour was criminal. Justice James had accepted the fact that Laverdure was speeding at 60 km/hour in a posted 50 zone when Hall and two others were hit outside the Pembroke Memorial Centre. At this time, there is no set timeline for a new trial.
