CNL updating environmental impact statement for NSDF

The Near Surface Disposal Facility (NSDF) proposed by Canadian Nuclear Laboratories will hold up to a million cubic meters of low level radioactive waste. Manager of the NSDF regulatory approval, Sandra Faught, says they are currently updating their environmental impact statement for the NSDF project. She says next is the environmental assessment and licencing approval from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commision. A public consultation process will take place before CNL is given permission to start building the facility. Faught encourages residents to check out information on all of CNL’s projects up on their website.

 

She says the NSDF will provide a spot for safe and permanent disposal of low level radioactive waste. The facility will mostly store contaminated soil, building demolition material, lab equipment such as, gloves, coats and mop heads. The NSDF will look like a municipal landfill, be approximately 18-meters tall and cover roughly 16 hectares (39.5 acres), but not be visible from the main campus at the Chalk River Labs or from the Ottawa River. Faught says protecting the environment and the Ottawa River is extremely important to CNL as employees live here, fish here and enjoy all aspects of the outdoors.
