Miramichi Lodge in Pembroke is always striving to improve the care of its residents, and will be doing so with an increased focus on those with dementia, thanks to a donation from well-known Pembroke physicians Dr. Eng and Dr. Pan.
The local pair have made a donation to help the lodge deliver what is known as the Butterfly model of dementia care.
The Butterfly care model was developed by Dr. David Sheard in 1995.
It has been implemented at venues in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, the U.S and Canada.
The Butterfly model creates home-like neigbourhoods within the wider residence.
Treatment is delivered to these groups of about 14 residents- but training staff is about a year-long process.
The donation from doctors Eng and Pan will get the process underway, and in their honour the 1A dementia care unit, will now be known as the Dr. Pan and Dr. Eng Dementia Care Unit.
A capital fundraising project will follow, to make delivery of the Butterfly model of care a reality at Miramichi Lodge.
