Following the collapse of conciliation talks between Montreal-based GDI and members of Local 639 of the Union of National Defence Employees, over 80 cleaners remain on strike at Garrison Petawawa.
While talks ended July 24th, the president of the local, Kevin MacInnis says his bargaining team remains prepared to return to the table at a moment’s notice.
He says the cleaners are being disrespected by contract concessions demanded by the firm, which had refused to honour provisions in an existing agreement.
In labour language, the term “scab” refers to someone who takes another’s job while they are on strike.
MacInnis says it’s a practice GDI is using, and it’s not helpful to anybody.
The Local 639 president knows the picket line is causing delays for people getting to and from the base.
He appreciates everyone’s patience and understanding.
