Both Bonnechere Manor and Miramichi Lodge long-term care homes have begun a journey to turn a dementia care unit into a Butterfly Home.
The first step involved officials taking a tour of the first butterfly model home in Ontario.
Shelley Sheedy, Director of Long-Term Care for the County of Renfrew says it was important for stakeholders to make the journey.
Sheedy says the Butterfly model involves a more person-centred approach for dealing with residents, connecting with them at every moment of a resident’s day.
That’s done by reducing the number of residents in a dementia care unit.
The Director of Long-Term Care notes 27 people having dinner together does not present as a natural setting, whereas thirteen dining together is more comfortable for the resident-participant.
Both Bonnechere Manor and Miramichi Lodge will be guided in their transitions to the Butterfly Model by a team of consultants familiar with the practise.
