Ontario’s Fire Marshal, John Pegg, is hoping everyone will make Fire Safety a Holiday Tradition, and our local Fire Chiefs echo that sentiment.
Dan Herback, Fire Chief for the City of Pembroke, says cooking and candles are the top two causes of fire over the holiday season.
Audio PlayerChief Herback says if you’re putting up a fresh Christmas tree, keep the base of the trunk in water at all times.
The Chief says extension cords are a danger; they can wear out fast if they are put under a carpet or rug.
Keep space heaters away from anything that can burn, including curtains and furniture.
Herback reminds us that In Ontario, you must have a working CO alarm adjacent to each sleeping area of the home if you have a fuel-burning appliance, a fireplace or an attached garage.
The Chief says while you shouldn’t make it sound like an in-flight escape warning, make sure everyone knows two ways to get out of your home, and where to meet up if you have to flee a fire.
