The town of Petawawa is in the midst of a process to determine whether or not to implement a Municipal Accommodation Tax, also known as the MAT tax. On Tuesday night, municipal officials opened their doors at the Civic Centre to gather feedback from the community on the idea. In an interview with myFM News, Kelly Williams, Director of Community Services explains how you would see the fee implemented in Petawawa.
Williams says the money from the MAT tax would be used to promote the town, with a big push to show Petawawa as an ATV and snowmobile friendly community. He says the potential for tourism along the Algonquin Trail is huge for the area. According to stats from the Ottawa Valley Tourist Association, Petawawa could generate between 50 and $80,000 per year with the MAT tax. A final decision on the matter will eventually come from town council.
