An incident in Petawawa is one of several prompting the Canadian military to take a good look at its new armoured vehicle fleet. The brakes could be culprit in an incident where one of the 18-tonne vehicles rolled through a red light and hit a car near Garrison Petawawa. According to the Ottawa Citizen, it was one of eight incidents since January of last year. However there were no injuries as a result of any of the accidents. Initially, the Petawawa collision was reported as a driver-error, but it seems the driver reported a problem with the TAPV brakes. In November of last year, in Halifax, the brakes reportedly failed before a vehicle hit a wall, and the soldier driving had to take ‘evasive action to avoid being struck’. The paper quoted army spokesman Lt.-Col. Doug MacNair as saying “We are working with experts to try and determine if there is a problem with the vehicles braking performance at low-speed, and if the problem is isolated to a few vehicles or the result of something that may affect the wider fleet”.
