While we still have no reported local cases of the novel coronavirus, staff are still preparing for an outbreak. Chief Paramedic and Director of Emergency Services for the County of Renfrew, Mike Nolan, provided an emergency management update at the county council meeting on Wednesday (Feb. 26th). Nolan says public health officials have indicated it’s not possible to contain the disease on a global perspective and adds it’s a matter of time until we see it here at home.
Nolan acknowledges there have been significant changes with the novel coronavirus in the last 48-hours. He urges anyone who thinks they may be infected to NOT go to the hospital and instead call public health so paramedics can do testing in your own home.
County staff talked about reviewing the continuity of operations and pandemic planning documents to ensure if there is a mass disruption to staff due to this sickness they’re still able to keep the roads plowed, maintain levels of government and protect the most vulnerable residents living in long-term care. Residents are reminded to follow the warnings of the local health unit and stay home if you’re sick.
Back in January local paramedics took part in training on biological containment and also stocked up on masks, gloves and bio-protective suits.
