A local school board is facing a $10-million lawsuit over historical sexual assaults from a former teacher and principal in Pembroke. According to the Madawaska Current, the Renfrew County District School Board has been slapped with with a lawsuit seeking damages by three students who say they were sexually assaulted at Fairview Public School between 1973 and 1979. The newspaper says the victims are one woman living in Ottawa, another woman who lives in the Town of Renfrew, and a man living in Eganville. In a media release by lawyer Michael Switzer, he says officials at the school board knew about the abuse, but allowed it to continue for years. Former educator Clarke Anderson was found guilty in 1998 of seven counts of indecent assault against boys and girls. The lawyer suggests there could be more victims and they hope others will come forward to seek justice. We’ll be reaching out to the school board and lawyer of the victims for further comment on the matter.
