Firefighters in Petawawa remained on the scene of a residential blaze overnight. Deputy Fire Chief for the Town Petawawa, Craig Proulx, says they got the call to Riverstone Trail just before 6:00 pm on Tuesday night (May 19th). Proulx says when they arrived on scene the house was fully engulfed with two nearby homes threatened by the flames. The Deputy Fire Chief says one house was a total loss, one house sustained serious damage to the roof along with some water damage and another home has heat damage to the siding.
Proulx says one of the challenges last night was dealing with the public who were jamming up the streets. He says they had to maneuver the fire trucks around kids to make it to the scene.
The Deputy Fire Chief for the Town of Petawawa adds this serves as a good reminder to have a fire safety plan and working smoke alarms at home. Proulx says you should practice the fire safety plan so everyone in your home knows how to safely get out in case of an emergency. He adds with the lightweight material such as glue and wood that’s used to build homes and buildings burning faster, you don’t have a lot of time to get out safely.
Proulx says one bystander was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and adds they aren’t aware of any other injuries. The Deputy Chief says the fire appears to have started in the garage, but the cause is still under investigation.
