Multiple partners in the nuclear industry are coming together to build and operate a Micro Modular Reactor at the Chalk River Laboratories site.
Global First Power (GFP), Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation (USNC) and Ontario Power Generation (OPG) have formed a joint venture called the Global First Power Limited Partnership.
GFP will oversee the proposed Micro Modular Reactor Project and assist with project development, licensing, construction and operation of reactor in Chalk River.
The micro modular reactor would serve as a model for future projects across Canada to provide safe and sustainable low-carbon power and heat to industries and remote communities.
The President and CEO of OPG, Ken Hartwick, says they are excited about the advancement of low-carbon small modular reactors in Canada.
The USNC Micro Modular Reactor is made up of the nuclear plant that generates heat, and the adjacent power plant that converts heat into electricity or provides process heat for industrial applications. The electrical power could also be supplied to the area grid, over an anticipated life span of 20 years.
The 15 megawatt thermal (approximately 5 MW electrical) Micro Modular Reactor Project is currently undergoing an environmental assessment. Site preparation is expected to start in 2021.
This is the third stage of CNL’s four stage process to host a small modular reactor. The long-term goal is to have a small modular reactor built by 2026.
