The City of Pembroke has issued a heat warning and is making cooling stations available. In Pembroke and the surrounding areas temperatures are expected to hit 40 degrees with the humidex for the next three days. Residents who have nowhere to shelter from the heat this weekend can attend either the Pembroke Mall or West End Mall.
Heat warnings are issued through Environment Canada when very high temperatures or humidity conditions are expected to pose a higher risk of heat illnesses such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion. Extreme heat can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and even death.
Health Canada says to follow these five steps to protect yourself and your family in very hot weather:
- Prepare for the heat
- Pay close attention to how you – and those around you – feel
- Stay hydrated
- Stay cool
- Avoid exposure to extreme heat when outdoors
