Mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus have been found in Renfrew County.
According to the local health unit, the bugs carrying the disease were found in Renfrew around the intersection of Bonnechere Street South and Opeongo Road.
Dr. Robert Cushman, Acting Medical Officer of Health says this is only the third time that mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile in Renfrew County and District since the health unit began monitoring mosquitoes in 2005.
Mosquito traps are set up every week across the region during the summer months. There have not been any reported human cases of West Nile so far in 2020.
Health officials say the risk of being infected by the West Nile virus remains low for the region.
Some ways to prevent mosquitoes in the area include wearing light-colored clothing, removing any standing water around your home, cottage or campsite, and by turning over compost piles on a regular basis.
