The granddaughter of an 80-year-old woman who was the victim of a racially motivated attack in Pembroke has spoken out. Cindy Tran grew up in Pembroke and says racism has always existed in the community.
Tran says there’s many great people and families that live in Pembroke, but growing up she noticed a lot of kids who were ignorant to her Vietnamese heritage and culture.
After her 80-year-old grandmother had a rock thrown at her eye, racial slurs yelled at her and her house egged, Tran wrote a long article calling out the injustice in Pembroke.
The Mayor of Pembroke has since reached out to the family to see how the city can help and others have asked if vigils will be organized. Tran says they don’t want a one and done solution, they want something that’s going to have a lasting impact.
She says her grandmother doesn’t want the teenagers thrown in jail or something severe that will stay with them for life. Instead the family wants the individuals involved to realize how wrong what they did was and work towards being better people.
Tran says many people of colour from Pembroke have reached out to her to thank her for having the courage to tell the story.
