The Pembroke Regional Hospital (PRH) is welcoming Dr. Nathaniel Abutu who is the hospital’s third obstetrician/ gynaecologist, alongside Dr. Sarah Leavey and Dr. Kayode Fadare.
Dr. Abutu, who began seeing patients earlier this month, comes to the region from Nova Scotia where he practiced at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital / Nova Scotia Health Authority for the past five years.
Dr. Fadare says the community will benefit greatly from having a third obstetrician/gynaecologist, especially with his considerable experience in the field.
Born and raised in Nigeria, Dr. Abutu’s draw to the medical field was greatly influenced by his older brother who practices medicine as a family physician in the West African country.
After completing medical school in Nigeria, Dr. Abutu worked for a short time with Federal Capital Health Services before moving to Ireland to pursue additional training in obstetrics and gynaecology, a specialty he chose, in part, because he appreciates the honour of being part of the birth process.
He spent a total of 10 years practicing and furthering his education in Ireland including completion of the obstetrics/gynaecology diploma program at Trinity College as well as earning a Masters in Public Health at the University of Ireland. Ironically, it was during his time in Ireland that Dr. Abutu first met Dr. Fadare who had a similar career path.
In 2015, Dr. Abutu was presented with an opportunity to practice on the east coast of Canada, a decision that he said was a great fit for his family. His recent move to Ontario was prompted by a desire to find work for his wife who, specially trained in chemical and pharmaceutical analysis, is more likely to find something in her field in this part of the province.
Since settling into his new practice, Dr. Abutu said he has received a warm welcome and everyone has been very pleasant and helpful.
Dr. Abutu says with an interest in minimally invasive procedures and high risk obstetrics, he will be offering a broad spectrum of general obstetrics and gynaecology services, including prenatal and intrapartum care for pregnant women. Dr. Abutu will also be providing a full range of surgical procedures in general obstetrics and gynaecology and looks forward to providing services that will meet the needs of women in the community and surrounding areas.
In his spare time, he looks forward to being able to do some sight-seeing and spending time with his family which includes three children, ages 18, 16 and 10.
