You can tune into a virtual open house this week to get details on the Nuclear Power Demonstration (NPD) closure project.
The facility previously operated as a nuclear generating station and training centre for 25-years. Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) plans to demolish the above ground structure and place the debris underground and cover it with a specialized grout.
Topics covered in the virtual open house include how Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) is protecting the Ottawa River, feedback received from the public and Indigenous communities and the long-term safety of the project.
You can also get information on the Chimney Swifts which are an at risk species that roosts in the ventilation stack. The ventilation stack will be the only standing structure once the former nuclear generating station is demolished.
The NPD closure project is currently in the middle of the federal environmental assessment. Pending approval of the revised environmental assessment submitted by CNL, the project is scheduled to go ahead in 2022.
The first meeting was held on December 9th with a second event on Monday, December 14th. The next virtual open house will be Thursday, December 17th from 10:00am to noon.
