The victim of a reported kidnapping and attempted murder has been questioned about the incident. 74-year-old William or Bill Kirby is at the Pembroke courthouse this week answering to the serious charges which also include aggravated assault and for issuing death threats.
The defense attorney for Kirby asked the victim a series of questions on the stand today (January 7th, 2021). The defense suggested Kirby didn’t kidnap her, but instead took her to a remote area to discuss their relationship in private, something the victim denied. The defense also suggested the victim hit Kirby with a stick or a log before he stabbed her, but she also denied those claims. The blade used is described as a throwing knife that’s roughly 3.5 inches long and left a 1.5 centimeter wound.
The story of events from the victim stayed the same with only slight confusion on the exact times and dates. The victim told the court she thinks Kirby took her out to the woods that day to kill her.
Kirby was visibly frustrated in the courtroom while listening to the victim tell her side of the story and could be seen throwing his pen down, shaking his head and laughing to himself.
The defense for Kirby highlighted the fact that he stayed with the victim until help arrived, gave them water and used his jacket as a pillow until the ambulance showed up. Kirby also called 911 multiple times.
Another 10 audio recordings were submitted as evidence today that included Kirby saying “my nerves are shot” and “I’m at my wits end”. Those recordings were taken the day before and the day of the alleged attempted murder and kidnapping incident.
Kirby is accused of kidnapping the victim, driving roughly 20-minutes, stabbing them once in the stomach, kicking them while they’re on the ground and stabbing them again in the neck. The victim never saw Kirby stab her in the neck, but felt a sharp pain when Kirby was walking behind her. The victims car was found running and abandoned a block away from where she worked the day the charges were laid.
The trial has already seen over half a dozen witnesses take the stand and is expected to last until the end of next week. The Pembroke courthouse has installed additional plexiglass barriers for COVID-19 safety precautions.
