There’s talk of bringing a new waste diversion plant to Renfrew County.
Representatives from Sustane Technologies made a presentation to county council this morning (May 26th, 2021).
Sustane Technology says they have the ability to reduce C02E emissions by roughly 10% for participating communities.
The process involves turning landfill materials and plastics into recyclable materials like bio fertilizer and fuel products such as diesel.
Only about 10% of materials brought to the facility would be diverted to landfills.
The Sustane Technology diversion process does not involve burning or gasification and includes shredding materials, removing metals with magnets and steam cooking the shredded materials at high temperatures for over an hour.
McNab/Braeside Mayor Tom Peckett says he’s been in discussions with Sustane Technologies for the last two and a half years now.
Peckett says they are getting close to getting a new plant to go ahead in the area.
The representatives from Sustane Technologies told members of county council they don’t want to be a threat to local landfills such as the Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre.
Ottawa Valley Waste Management board member and Mayor of North Algona Wilberforce, James Brose, says with roughly 10-years of capacity at the landfill site, he doesn’t think they would be looked at as competition.
Sustane Technologies has been operating a one of a kind facility in Chester, Nova Scotia, since 2016.
The waste diverseion plant and has taken the equivalent of 41,256 cars off the road by processing 70,000 tonnes of garbage from 150,000 people each year.
