The Town of Petawawa is looking to create a Comfort Station along the Algonquin Trail. The work would be part of a legacy project to go along with the celebration for the Town of Petawawa’s 25th Silver Anniversary.
Earlier this week, council approved in principle the design and construction.
A Comfort Station along the Algonquin Trail would become a destination for trail users and local residents and provide washroom facilities, tourism promotion, customer service (direct-staff), a warming lounge for the winter, a gazebo for promotion and events, with the possibility for a retail and food complex and professional landscaping.
Director of Community Services Kelly Williams says this facility would be built next to the Algonquin Trail, likely near the end of Norman Street where the Town has been working to develop a trailhead for the past number of years.
Williams says they will have a sod turning event as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations with completion of the project in 2022 or 2023.
He adds they haven’t started the design process yet and have just provided some early pencil sketches to council to give them idea of what they’re talking about.
The Comfort Station would be located just west of the proposed container market location for the Norman Street section of the Algonquin Trail.
Funding for the project would come from money the Town of Petawawa has used to pay for the Civic Centre arena floor replacement project. With this project wrapping up in 2021, $250,000 will be freed up to be allocated to the Comfort Station at no additional cost to local taxpayers.
July 1st, 2022 marks the 25th anniversary of the Town of Petawawa. In 1997, the Village of Petawawa and Township of Petawawa were brought together.
To celebrate the 25th or silver anniversary the Town of Petawawa is combining Civic Centre Days and Canada Day into one large 4-day event focused on celebrating the Town’s achievements, while also celebrating the Town’s emergence from the current global pandemic.
