Petawawa councillors will vote on a 23-year-old policy that declines supporting any declarations and proclamations, including flag flying.
The matter came up after a request from a community member to fly the Pride flag in Petawawa was denied due to the policy.
Earlier this month (June 7th, 2021), Deputy Mayor Gary Serviss put forward a motion to reconsider resolution #11, which was adopted by council on February 3rd of 1998.
A motion to reconsider needs to be supported by a two-third majority vote from members of council.
If the motion is denied, it can not be considered again for a twelve month period.
Petawawa councillors will vote on the motion to reconsider as part of the virtual town council meeting on Monday (June 21st).
Other Ottawa Valley municipalities that have raised the Pride flag include Deep River, Laurentian Hills, Pembroke, Renfrew, Horton, McNab/Braeside, Arnprior, Carleton Place, Almonte and Lanark County offices in Perth.
The Renfrew County and District School Board also raised the Pride flag at all local schools this year for the first time ever.
