To honour the lives of all the Indigenous children who never made it home from residential schools, hundreds of orange ribbons have been placed along a busy bridge downtown in Pembroke, Ontario.
On Canada Day (July 1st, 2021), residents are encouraged to gather outside of the Pembroke courthouse (297 Pembroke Street East) at 1:45pm.
A walk will take place to the bridge outside of Pembroke City Hall arriving at 2:15pm.
Those attending are encouraged to wear orange in solidarity with residential school survivors, wear purple to acknowledge the brutality these children endured and bring percussion instruments and placards.
If you can’t attend, you’re encouraged to tie ribbons to a bridge near your home and send them to kitchissippiottawacocchapter@gmail.com
The Kitchissippi-Ottawa Valley Chapter of the Council of Canadians plans to send all photos to the Pikwakanagan Chief and Band Council to share with their community to show we are listening, paying attention, and care.
On July 1st, 2021, the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation will NOT be celebrating Canada Day.
Instead, a Light Up The Lake event is planned at 8:30pm along the shores of Golden Lake with residents asked to light a candle in solidarity and place them at the end of your dock or along the shoreline.
Dear Friends, this has been a difficult time within our Community. Your support is amazing. Chi Meegwetch
