Banners recognizing military veterans are lining the streets downtown Pembroke. The veteran banners went up in October and will continue to be displayed until after Remembrance Day. Manager of the Pembroke Business Improvement Area (PBIA) Bethea Summers says the program was launched in 2020 and sees veterans who are connected to Pembroke honoured with banners placed on poles downtown.
Families can sponsor a banner for $120 with some of the proceeds going towards the legion. Summers says they had 16 banners the first year and 43 banners this year.
The banners start on the poles in front of post office and continue down Pembroke Street West to Christie Street and along Victoria Street. She adds next year they plan to use Lake, Alexander, Anges and Frank Nighbor Streets to place the veteran banners on all available posts downtown.
Summers feels Remembrance Day is an important time to reflect and recognize the sacrifices that serving and retired members of the military have made.
