The Town of Petawawa is moving forward with a veteran banner program.
Deputy Mayor Gary Serviss says banners will likely go up early in October and stay up until the middle of November.
The “Honour Our Veterans Banner Program” will recognize all past and present military units that once operated or are presently operating on Garrison Petawawa.
Each banner will be created to honour a specific military unit that once operated or is presently operating on Garrison Petawawa and it will include the unit name, a Canadian flag, the unit cap badge, and a field of poppies.
It’s similar to the veteran banner program in Pembroke, but instead of recognizing individual soldiers, entire units are featured.
Serviss says they hope to get about 10-years out of each banner.
Garrison Coordinator Captain Jeffrey Groom says it’s a great initiative to recognize the active and former military units in Petawawa.
Captain Groom says they had to get confirmation from all the units and work with the historical society to get details on the units that no longer exist.
The banners would be placed on Petawawa Boulevard, Civic Centre Road and Victoria Street.
Each banner will be double-sided with each unit being represented on both sides of their individual banner.
The Petawawa Legion Branch 517 banner will be the first banner immediately after the Petawawa River Bridge, followed by the 4th Canadian Division Support Base banner and the 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group banner.
Petawawa Mayor Bob Sweet has already purchased the first two banners for the initiative.
Local residents can sponsor a veteran banner for $200.
Sponsorship information is available online here, or by contacting the Rotary Club of Petawawa.
