The Ontario Geographic Names Board has received a request to name a waterfall in Bonnechere Valley the Menard Falls.
Council received a request to have the third waterfall at the Fourth Chute Falls named after the Menard Family.
According to Kathy Kilby, who wrote to Bonnechere Valley council about the mater two years ago, the Menard’s first settled in the Fourth Chute area in 1849 and had two family members killed during the first World War.
Kilby says the Menards were one of the founding families of Gratton Township and this would be a great way to honour them.
The Fourth Chute Falls are located next to Bonnechere Caves outside of Eganville.
The Ontario Geographic Names Board says as part of the naming process they need to connect with people who know any other names, in any language, being used for this waterfall and determine if they support the proposed name.
Online responses can be submitted until December 31st.
The Ontario Geographic Names Board also plans to reach out to local First Nations, municipalities and organizations for input.
