This weekend, a 3-on-3 hockey tournament kicks off in Deep River. Organizer Stephan Bouliane says puck drops for the first game on Saturday morning at 10:00am with a full schedule of teams and players lined up and ready to go. There’s four different age groups with approximately 25 teams and 200-players set to take part in the Primeau Law Open Air 3-on-3 Tournament.
Bouliane says volunteers have been working with the town and health unit to ensure all COVID-19 safety guidelines are followed.
He adds despite working to make sure all public health guidelines are followed, no outdoor rinks would let them host the event, so volunteers had to build one themselves. Some people were out until at 11:30pm this week making the boards and ice so things are ready for Saturday morning.
Bouliane says they hope to raise some money to be able to create a permanent outdoor rink in Deep River. While there are outdoor skating surfaces in Deep River, the town doesn’t have an outdoor arena. Bouliane says they’re trying to raise about $14,000 to install one for local residents to use.
The 3-on-3 hockey tournament will take place at Grouse Park in Deep River. The arena is in the ball field and only players and officials taking part in the tournament are able to enter the fenced area. The tournament will continue again next weekend with a medals awarded to the top teams. He adds the event wouldn’t be possible without the help from local sponsors, community volunteers and town staff.
