The Town of Renfrew has received an update on work taking place at Ma-te-Way. Council was updated on the project as part of their virtual meeting on February 8th, 2022. Recreation Director Kevin Hill says the first contractor left the site last week with all the rock anchors installed.
He adds excavation and foundation work continues to move forward. Hill says due to the extreme cold weather in January, contractors lost about five days of construction, but were able to make a few of those days with the nice weather last week.
The recreation director adds crews were able to complete a 76-meter concrete pour. One issue raised by the recreation director was the fact that a water line that runs from Ma-te-Way to water the football field has not been located. Hill says if contractors have not located the water line by the time excavation is completed they will run another one in case it was crushed.
Last week, the Town of Renfrew discussed the space with tenants and hope to go over some detailed drawings this week before going out to tender.
Plans are to build a 76, 500 square foot facility next to the current arena in Ma-te-Way Park. The expansion includes an Indigenous Cultural Centre, an NHL sized ice surface, an elevated walking track, fitness centre, regulation sized gymnasium, multipurpose rooms, Parks, Recreation and Facilities administrative offices and lease space.
The $16-million Ma-te-Way expansion project is expected to be complete in December with a grand opening event for the community on New Year’s Eve (December 31st, 2022).
The Town of Renfrew is also applying for funding to help build a $250,000 play structure at Ma-te-Way Park.
