The Canadian Armed Forces has roughly 740 members deployed in the Ukraine and Latvia.
Public Affairs Officer, Sub-Lieutenant Alex Roy, tells myFM the vast majority deployed on these operations are from 5 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group based in Valcartier, Québec.
Roy says only one member from 2 Field Ambulance, based out of Garrison Petawawa, is currently deployed on Op UNIFIER.
Approximately 200 members of the Canadian Armed Forces are deployed on Operation UNIFIER in the Ukraine, and another 540 soldiers in Latvia to lead a NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group.
Roy says all operations undertaken by the Canadian Armed Forces encompass some degree of risk.
As a result of the complex operational environment linked to Russia’s unwarranted aggression against Ukraine, the Canadian Armed Forces has temporarily relocated the majority of Joint Task Force – Ukraine (JTF-U) personnel deployed in Ukraine to elsewhere in Europe to ensure the safety and security of members.
Canada plans to donate over $7-million of lethal weapons and assorted support items to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This equipment includes machine guns, pistols, carbines, 1.5 million rounds of ammunition, sniper rifles, and various related equipment.
