The Town of Petawawa is moving forward with plans to build a comfort station along the Algonquin Trail. Designs were presented to council on Monday night (March 28th, 2022). Mayor Bob Sweet says there will be accessible washrooms, a lounge, a bicycle repair station, a covered area outside and adds the building will also act as a visitors information centre.
The Petawawa Mayor hopes to have a sod turning event this summer as part of the towns 25th anniversary celebrations. He says crews may start clearing the area this year and is hopeful that construction can begin in the fall or early in 2023.
Sweet says the comfort station will enhance services provided along the Algonquin Trail and be built near the Norman Behnke Hall. He adds the design would be similar to a train station to recognize the old rail line that has been replaced with the multi-use Algonquin Trail.
The comfort station is being built as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations for the Town of Petawawa on July 1st, 2022. Back in 1997, the Village of Petawawa and Township of Petawawa were brought together.
A number of activities are planned for the 25th anniversary celebration in Petawawa which will be a combination of Civic Centre Days and Canada Day activities into one large 4-day event.
