The Pembroke Business Improvement Area (PBIA) is looking to offer pop-up patios in the downtown core. The PBIA has proposed a three year pilot project that would run from Victoria Day weekend to Thanksgiving weekend.
Pop-up patios would be located at:
- Victoria Street (outside of the former entrance to Ottawa Valley Vision)
- Albert Street (as a gateway to the Pembroke Waterfront)
- Pembroke Street West (vacant lot beside Vogue Cleaners)
During an update on April 5th, 2022, Manager of the Pembroke Improvement Business Area, Bethea Summers, told City Council the patios would be professionally installed from Pop-Up Street Patios out of Hamilton, Ontario.
Summers says these outdoor dining areas would benefit the roughly 1,000 workers downtown Pembroke and provide eating spaces for employees, residents and visitors. Signage would be installed for no-smoking, no-vaping and no loitering with contact information readily available to inform the PBIA of any issues.
Pembroke Mayor Mike LeMay says he would like to see this project move forward. City Councillor Brian Abdallah noted this will attract more people downtown and adds this is a project funded by the PBIA.
A report with more information will be brought forward to the April 19th meeting for council consideration. Last summer, the Town of Arnprior implemented a similar patio pilot project.
