Nathan Blok returned to the track on the Victoria Day weekend in Bowmanville in an event where the weather was declared the winner.
As a member of the new Ottawa-based APEX V2R racing team, the 28-year old Blok was behind the wheel in his Scion FRS race car in the Production Class of the Super Production Challenge (SPC).
The team is still fine-tuning his car’s engine, so he was running 30 horse power below his competitors, but Nathan still managed to qualify mid-field and 13th in class among the 46 competitors on the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park track.
The Saturday morning race began under sunny conditions, but was marred by a collision on Lap Two that forced cancellation of the morning event even as Nathan was moving up in the pack early in his first-ever standing-start race.
Although the second race was slated for 4:15PM, severe weather- including a small tornado, washed the event out and caused over a million dollars damage, including to Blok’s team’s 40 foot trailer and two canopies.
Worse still, one person was struck by lightning and another broke an arm.
Mid morning on Sunday saw a wet track for Race 3 with a steady drizzling rain. With 40 cars starting the 30 minute race, the decision was made to have a traditional rolling start instead of a standing start for safety reasons. Again Blok started mid field and 13th class and, in tight competition, managed to squeeze a ninth-place finish.
Blok’s next race weekend is June 4 and 5 at the Calabogie Motorsport Park.
