You can register now for the 60th anniversary open house for the Nuclear Power Demonstration (NPD). With Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) planning to decommission the NPD site, this may be one of the last opportunities for the public to see the facility.
Katie Shorter, the Manager of Regulatory Approval for NPD Closure Project, tells myFM for the first time in Canadian history, on June 4th, 1962, nuclear power was used to generate electric power to the grid at the site near Rolphton.
Shorter says they are undergoing the environmental assessment for the decommissioning of the reactor.
She says the timeline depends on the regulatory process, but if all goes according to plan the site could be decommissioned by 2026.
Shorter says the community is invited to the 60th anniversary open house where they will have site tours, booths, displays and food.
Registration is required for the open house and closes on June 23rd. The event will be held on June 25th from 11:00am to 4:00pm at the NPD site along Highway 17 in Rolphton.
