Preventative steps are being taken this year to reduce the Canada Goose population at the Petawawa Golf Course.
Garrison Petawawa says in an effort to reduce the threat to public health and safety caused by excessive excrement and aggressive birds in the area, the golf club will be working with the base and Environment Canada to reduce the Canada goose population.
Shotgun blasts may be heard near the Petawawa Golf Club on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 6:00am and 7:00am starting June 15th.
Garrison Petawawa says prior to any firing, a safety sweep of the area will be conducted and sentries put in place.
The public is asked to avoid holes 6 and 7 on the golf course during the firing.
On social media, the Garrison says Environment Canada has permitted the culling of up to two geese per week and they hope the sound, in combination with deterrent carcasses, will encourage the birds to move away from the golf course and nearby trails.
