A book tree has been installed at the arboretum site in Pembroke.
Brian Abdallah, a Pembroke City Councillor, arboretum committee member and educational liaison for the project, says the custom tree cabinets for the book tree were designed by local student Kayden Hilts and the Pembroke Public Library has provided the reading materials.
Abdallah says residents can grab a book and read it at one of the picnic tables or underneath the new gazebos that have recently been installed.
Abdallah says the next steps for the arboretum include building a presenters corner stage, adding in a bird sanctuary, a purple martin birdhouse built by the schools in the fall and a water fountain.
The arboretum will also include open space in the middle for destination events, midways and flying kites.
Abdallah wanted to thank the Kiwanis Club and the Horticultural Society for their vision on the arboretum project. The arboretum is a centennial project of both the Kiwanis and Horticultural Society in Pembroke.
The arboretum is located in the green space at the Waterfront Park in Pembroke along Fred Blackstein Boulevard, between the Marina and Algonquin College.
