Darlene Travis is a parent volunteer with the newly established RISE support program. RISE works with adults who have intellectual disabilities. Travis has a 22-year-old son who is autistic and non-verbal. Travis says after he finished school they noticed there was a lack of supports and programs in the community. Travis says RISE is filling a service gap in the Pembroke area and adds the doors opened back on May 30th. Her son was there on the first day. As the parent volunteer, Travis does a lot of thrifting and goes to garage sales looking for new games, puzzles and different items to use in the sensory room. The programs at RISE are geared towards adults, but interest has been so strong they hope to add activities for intellectually disabled children in the near future.
