It was the first time in history the Stanley Cup made a stop in Petawawa. Shawn Allard, the Skills Development Coach for the Colorado Avalanche, grew up in Petawawa and played hockey with the Petawawa Patriots and Pembroke Lumber Kings. Allard brought the Stanley Cup back to his hometown on Tuesday night (August 30th, 2022). The Allard family hosted a fundraiser event for the Civic Centre arena and allowed members of the community the opportunity to get a photo with the Stanley Cup. Allard says it was a special moment and nice to the see the facility again after all these years.
Allard says they visited with some family and went up to Garrison Petawawa around 5:00pm.
After leaving Garrison Petawawa, the Stanley Cup received a military escort in a light armored vehicle (LAV) on the way to the Civic Centre arena.
Enno Kerckhoff, the Deputy Commander of 4th Canadian Support Group in Petawawa, says talking with the keepers of the Stanley Cup, they found out this is the first time it has been transported in a LAV.
Petawawa Mayor Bob Sweet says it’s great that the military community was involved adding the entrance on the military vehicle was unique.
The Mayor says it’s every kids dream when they put on skates to win the Stanley Cup and adds it’s nice to see the trophy come to Petawawa.
After the Stanley Cup leaves Petawawa, it will be heading to Ottawa to get ready for the next stop.
