Renfrew Town Council agrees that moving Greater Madawaska out of Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke doesn’t add up.
Council used their Tuesday, September 27th meeting to pass a motion officially backing their neighbouring township as they fight against a proposed change in federal ridings away from the other municipalities in Renfrew County and into Lanark-Frontenac.
Renfrew Reeve and County Councilor Peter Emon says taking Greater Madawaska away from the rest of Renfrew County doesn’t reflect where the township’s residents go for goods and services.
Mayor Don Eady echoed those concerns, noting that the costs of changing everything over to match their new situation alone means the move doesn’t make a lot of sense.
Councilor Sandi Heins pointed out how connected Greater Madawaska is to both Renfrew and other nearby townships. She says the proposed move would just split up two close municipalities.
Mayor Eady added that, alongside Calabogie, Griffith and Matawatchan are also important communities that do business in Renfrew.
The motion to support Greater Madawaska as they take their complaint to the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission was passed unanimously.
