It’s been a busy first year of work at the new Arboretum site at the Waterfront Park in Pembroke. Past President of the Kiwanis Club, Robert Lauder, tells myFM this week sugar maple trees will be planted.
Other work at the Arboretum site this summer has seen gazebos installed and trees planted from all over the world. Lauder adds they also saved an old tree that was going to be blown up with C4 and turned it into a bookshelf with help from local high school students and the Pembroke Public Library.
The middle of the Arboretum has been left empty to host events (such as the Multicultural Festival, a circus or midway) and pop-up dining surrounded by trees from all around the world.
Lauder says another big feature for the Arboretum will be a water feature in memory of first responders and wounded warriors. The water feature will be 100 percent drown proof with no chance of injuries.
The arboretum is located next to the Pembroke Marina and is a centennial project of the Pembroke Horticultural Society and Pembroke Kiwanis Club with support from a number of local service groups and schools.
