It’s the end of an era in Petawawa.
After 34-years as an elected official including the last 22-years as Mayor, Robert (Bob) Sweet is stepping back from municipal politics. Sweet attended his final council meeting on Monday night (November 7th, 2022) after he was first elected to represent Petawawa back in 1988. Sweet says he entered the council chambers on Monday night with mixed emotions.
The Mayor is proud that he was able to leave the Town of Petawawa debt free.
Sweet says he is excited about the future of Petawawa adding he sees nothing but positive things for the community.
Also retiring from municipal politics in Petawawa is long-time councillor and former Deputy Mayor Tom Mohns. After 19-years on Town Council, Mohns says he looks forward to spending some more time with family.
The Mohns family has been represented on Petawawa Town Council dating back to 1939.
Tom says great uncle Eddie Mohns, second cousin Elton Mohns, his dad Willard Mohns, uncle Brian Mohns and cousin Randy Mohns have all served Petawawa over the last 83-years.
Tom Mohns was first elected in 2003 and was involved with the Petawawa Family Centennial Health Centre since it first started, something he is most proud of.
Between Bob Sweet and Tom Mohns, the Town of Petawawa will be losing a combined 53-years of municipal experience. Sweet says the two have chaired close to 1,285 committee meetings over the years.
The long-time elected representatives received a standing ovation as part of Monday nights council meeting which ended with Mayor Sweet adjourning the meeting for the final time.
The new term of council in Petawawa will be sworn in on Tuesday, November 15th.
