A new term of council has taken office in Petawawa.
Petawawa Council will be led by newly elected Mayor Gary Serviss, Theresa Sabourin will serve as Deputy Mayor alongside councillors Murray Rutz, James Carmody, Karen Donovan, Lisa Coutu and Adam Driscoll.
Serviss talked about keeping taxes low in Petawawa.
The new Mayor wants to see more houses built, businesses set up and the trail system expanded in Petawawa.
Another concern for Mayor Serviss is alleviating traffic along Petawawa Boulevard.
Tuesday night marked the first time in over two decades there was a new Mayor in Petawawa. Serviss will replace Bob Sweet who served as an elected official in Petawawa for 34-years including the last 22-years as Mayor. The new Mayor credited Sweet and long-time councillor Tom Mohns for helping make Petawawa what it is today.
The inaugural council meeting was also the first time the Town of Petawawa read a land acknowledgment statement, the first time a woman was voted in as Deptuy Mayor in Petawawa and first time three female councillors were elected to town council. Serviss says these are exiting times for Petawawa.
Garrison Petawawa Commander Colonel John Vass congratulated the new mayor and councillors. Vass says having two members of the defence team elected to council is pretty special.
The inaugural meeting of the 2022-2026 term of council was held Tuesday night (November 15th) at Petawawa Town Hall.
