Algonquin College in Pembroke is searching for home for international students come January. Manager of Community and Student Affairs, Jamie Bramburger tells myFM that an influx of students are set to arrive in early 2023 and they are worried they may not have enough housing.
Most of the international students who will be studying at the Pembroke Campus this winter will be from India, but they will come from other parts of the world including Africa, Hong Kong and China. Bramburger says that welcoming families could be the best fit.
The Manager of Community and Student Affairs says they are hosting an information night on the topic.
Some students will arrive in December while others will be in Pembroke the first week of the New Year as their classes begin on January 9th. There are several privately owned and operated student residences that support the College’s out-of-town student population, but with limited spaces available for the winter term, there is a need to create more opportunities for students to secure housing. Most of these students will be studying in programs that include Practical Nursing, Computer Programming and Environmental Management and Assessment. Pembroke Campus Dean, Sarah Hall, says there is a plan to increase the number of international students at the campus moving forward. “Many international students are interested in earning a Canadian post-secondary credential and in recent years more of these students have branched out to regional campuses in smaller communities. This is a positive step forward for our campus and our community as we embrace diversity and work towards addressing the skilled workforce shortages in our region,” says Hall.
