The union representing 55,000 education workers in Ontario has filed a five day strike notice. Today’s notice from education workers means a strike is possible starting on Monday, November 21st if the Ford government doesn’t get a deal done.
The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) says bargaining talks with the province have broken down again. CUPE says they reached middle ground with the government on wages, but the notice of a potential provincewide strike comes after they say the government refused to invest in the services that students need and parents expect.
Education Minister Stephen Lecce says the government is disappointed at the strike notice and adds that the province has put forward multiple improved offers.CUPE says education workers are fighting to have more education assistants in class, to have an early childhood educator in every kindergarten classroom, for more library workers, custodians, secretaries and enough lunchroom supervisors.
