Today (December 6th), is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
The Renfrew County Catholic District School Board (RCCDSB) says flags will be lowered to half-mast to remember all those who have experienced gender based violence and those who have been lost to it. The Renfrew County District School Board (RCDSB) observed a moment of silence at 11:00am and asked others to join them by wearing a white ribbon.
End Violence Against Women Renfrew County organized a vigil this morning at the Women’s Monument in Petawawa. Spokesperson JoAnne Brooks says it’s important to remember what happened in 1989.
It’s been over 30-years since 14-young women were murdered at Polytechnique Montréal on December 6th, 1989. December 6th is recognized as The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
Brooks says the pandemic has escalated violence against women and notes two more women’s names have been added to the rock at the monument in Petawawa.
Back in June, an inquest in Renfrew County that looked into the September 2015 murders of Carol Culleton, Nathalie Warmerdam and Anastasia Kuzyk, recommended the Government of Ontario declare intimate partner violence an epidemic.
Brooks believes the inquest was a reminder about violence against women and by attending the ceremony it shows the community cares.
Brooks says it was heartwarming to see the turnout at the vigil.
