Pembroke’s Parks and Recreation committee has approved a recommendation to establish a permanent Pickleball court at Kinsmen Park. The new court will be installed in the already multi-purpose court at the park at the request of the Pembroke Pickleball Club. The Club anticipate that the cost would be less than $5,000 for the purchase and installation of the equipment including installation of net posts, post caps and net anchors. The cost would also be covered by the club.
Pickleball, one of the fastest growing sports is particularly attractive to older adults, however, anyone can play the sport. Currently, the court has been primarily used for multi-purpose, including but not limited to playing ball hockey, basketball and pickleball which was the intent of the successful Trillium Grant that the Kinsmen Club of the day had received. Over the past couple of years, the Pembroke Pickleball Club have utilized the space by erecting temporary nets, which the City had helped establish storage units for accessing nets and equipment. While the noticeable use for ball hockey and basketball has declined over the years, this court has always been a shared surface and at any given time could serve the purpose of basketball, ball hockey and pickleball along with other sports that would require a hardened surface. Up too three single courts can allow for a variety of sports to be played on the surface at one time. Basketball nets are located at the north side of the court with ball hockey nets in the middle and the permanent pickleball nets would be erected on the south side of the court.
