The Upper Ottawa Valley OPP would like to remind everyone to be cautious when buying online.
There’s been a surge in incidents that begin as someone buying something second hand online, the buyer sends their deposit, or in some instances the full asking price, only for the seller to not deliver and vanish with their money.
The OPP is reminding everyone to do their research on the purchase and seller and when possible, meet in a public place prior to paying any money for the item. This way you can ensure you see the item and make sure the condition is as advertised.
UOV OPP Detachment Commander Steph Neufeld stated, “Online property transactions are ever-increasing and the UOV OPP is proud to have launched a community safety initiative aimed at decreasing offences related to online marketplace transactions. Collaborative approaches like Project Safe Trade and can help to reduce harm and victimization in our communities.”
Some online safety tips include meeting in a populated public space, bringing a trusted friend or family member as a witness, conduct the transactions in the light of day, and keep all the receipts between yourself and the buyer or seller: emails, texts, voicemails.
If you or someone you know suspects they have been a victim of digital or online cybercrime, contact your local police service or local OPP detachment, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre: antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
